Response to “Train to the Museum? You’re already there” By David W. Dunlap (New York Times) http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/21/arts/design/21dunl.html?ref=design
This article, which is from the New York Times, discusses the public art that is on display throughout the Manhattan subway system. Since I have only been on the subway in New York once, I have never come across any of this work first hand. I agree with the author that having permanent art out into the environment is beneficial for everyone. Displaying this artwork is not just to help make the subway look nicer but it also enriches the people’s lives that get to view it everyday. Reading this article made me realize how much art I see everyday while driving through Philadelphia. Although I might take it for granted sometimes, it is always there enhancing the culture of the city. Dunlap describes how the art in the subway made him smile even on days when he would undergo chemotherapy. I thought that was a great example of the positive uplifting influence that art has.
